MESSAGE FROM TOWNSHIP OF HILLSIDE: The Importance of Recycling
Each resident of Hillside generates a substantial amount of waste every day. In a year, this totals many thousands of tons. As the amount of trash being thrown away each year increases, so does the cost to collect it, haul it and landfill it. With landfill capacity everywhere dwindling and, at the same time dumping fees increasing, recycling is the best way to reduce waste, stretch our resources and maintain a reasonable refuse collection rate.
As a Hillside resident, you are an integral part of the Township's Recycling Program. Recycling uses only a small amount of space and requires only a few seconds a day. We must continue to recycle- we can no longer afford NOT to do so.
Not only do you help preserve resources by recycling, but you also save tremendous amounts of money in the long run. Every ton you recycle is a ton you don't have to pay to throw out.
Keeping the Township of Hillside clean and beautiful is a goal we all want to achieve. We can and should strive toward this goal, not only because it is the law in the State of New Jersey, but because it is the right thing to do! Every little bit helps and collectively, we can accomplish so much.
Let's demonstrate a sense of pride in our community!!!!
Sanitary Sewers
We provide maintenance and repairs to all sanitary sewer lines throughout the Township and of all storm water sewers on Township owned roads. We also maintain the North Avenue pumping Station and the Evans Terminal Pumping Station. Hillside Township is a component of the Essex and Union County joint sewer commission. Residents are responsible for their lateral lines from their house to the main line in the street. For more information on Sanitary Sewers Back Up Prevention call 973.926.1110.
Street Sweeping
Is performed year round weather permitting. From mid October until early December, leaf collection is in progress.
Shade Tree
Work is performed year round weather permitting. It involves the planting, feeding, spraying, trimming and removal of trees. This department works on Township Trees only.
For more information call 973.926.1164.
Solid Waste
Rising costs in the solid waste industry has caused tremendous increases in the delivery of Solid Waste and Recycling collection. In an effort to stabilize these increases and hold the line on taxes, the Township, beginning on June 16th, 2008, has revised the collection dates to completely eliminate Saturday collections, while still providing for two (2) collections for every home weekly. this was accomplished by re-districting the collection areas. Refer to the solid waste collection calendar.
Recycling drop-off
Residents may drop off their batteries and used motor oil for recycling at the Public Works dept. 274 Hillside Avenue (behind the community center). We do not accept brush or bulk waste at the recycling center. For a schedule of pick ups call 973.926.1110 or check the online calendar. The county provides special household waste disposal days for Union County residents, for a schedule call 908.654.9881
Repairs and maintenance of traffic signals, various street signs and painting of traffic lines and curbs are the responsibility of this department. During the summer months we paint yellow curbs in all the school and main streets in town. The placement of Holiday Decorations along the business areas are done in conjunction with members of the public works department. To report a street light out residents should call Public Service directly at 908.353.7000
Construction Debris Prohibited
If your construction project requires that you obtain a permit from the building Department you are responsible for the removal of your construction debris. All projects that include wood, roofing, siding, sheet rock, brick or stone must be disposed of at the expense of the homeowner. If you need additional assistance please call 973.926.1110
