The Hillside Senior Citizens Center is truly a community-based leisure recreation facility that is alive with activity for the Township's older age population.
Described by its director, Dr. Dennis Vodarsik, as a multi-purpose community focal point for Senior Citizen activities and services. The Senior Citizen Program provides transportation, congregate site nutrition, health maintenance education, and screening, structured classes of Instruction (crocheting, sewing, knitting, needlecraft, arts, and crafts, ceramics, and painting), volunteer opportunities, cultural and recreational trips, intergenerational projects, information and referral, and application assistance with Senior Citizen special benefit program (including Home Energy Assistance, Homestead Rebate, Property Tax Reimbursement, Pharmaceutical Assistance to the Aged and Disabled, and more.)
The Senior Citizens Program previously was housed from 1976 to 1992 at the William H. Bule Community Center. In 1992, the Senior Citizens Center opened its own doors (at 265 Hollywood Avenue) to a new era of growth and commitment to the promotion of independence and dignity ideals for all Township Senior Citizens. The extension of the commitment to services and activities for the well being of the targeted elderly population is intended, also, to impact significantly and positively upon families, caregivers, and the whole community.
Senior citizen participants are daily engaged in a schedule of activities that also reaches out to a special initiatives, including outreach to the nursing home/institutionalized and homebound, and reading and "help" projects at Township elementary schools.
